Giuseppe Perone Curriculum

After his graduation in the Academy of Fine Arts of Naples (1994), in the 1998 he started making sculptures and installations in which he represents animals and objects of daily use, drawn from their context. All its sujects are covered with a thin layer of sand, a material that hints at both childhood games and at the fragility of things subject to processes of unceasing transformation. In 2000 he was invited to realize a sculpture for "Bandiere di Maggio" (Flags of May) in Naples. In 2001 he exhibited in a solo show at the Mimmo Scognamiglio Gallery in Naples and he took part in "Chaos & Communication - 10th Biennial of Young Artists from Europe and the Mediterranean" in Sarajevo, "Napoli e Terra d'Otranto. Aspetti della giovane arte al Sud" at the Aragonese Castle of Otranto, "Cittadini e non" at the Civic Gallery of Contemporary Art of Avellino. In 2002 he participated in the group exhibitions "Napoli Anno Zero, Qui ed ora" at Museum of Castel Sant'Elmo and he won the "MiArt Preview section" prize. In 2003 his permanent installation has been located in one of Naples Circumvesuviana stations and he took part in "Last Judgment" at the Seattle's Bumbershoot arts festival, the preview of the "Quadriennale d'Arte di Roma" at Royal Palace of Naples and the group show "Inchiostro indelebile - Impronte a regola d'arte" at MACRO Museum of Rome. In 2004 he had a solo exhibition at Ronchini Gallery in Terni and took part in the group show "Lasciateci Divertire" at Municipality Palace of Arezzo. In 2005 he exhibited at ARCOS - Museum of Contemporary Art in Benevento, and later one of his works was shown by the critic Marco Meneguzzo in the occasion of the exhibition "Italian Sculpture of the 20th Century", organized by the Arnaldo Pomodoro Foundation in Milan. In 2006 he exhibited in a solo show at 1/9 unosunove gallery in Rome and took part in "International Sculpture" at the Aglié Castle in Turin, "Ars in Fabula" at the Praetorian Palace of Certaldo and "Arterritory" at the Centrale Montemartini in Rome. In 2007 he had two solo shows, at Furini Arte in Arezzo and at Mimmo Scognamiglio. Besides, he took part in "Linee all'Orizzonte" at the Modern Art Gallery of Genoa and "International Sculpture Prize - Italy/France" in Materima - Sculpture Citadel (Casalbeltrame). In 2010 and 2011 he had two solo shows, at Ronchini Gallery in Terni and at Guidi&Schoen in Genoa. In 2011 he took part in "Art Stays" in Ptuj (Slovenia), where he returned in 2014. In 2012 he took part in the group exhibitions "Nelle Terre di Piero. Omaggio a Manzoni" at Pallavicina Tower (Bergamo), "+ 50 Sculture in città tra memoria (1962) e presente (2012)" in Spoleto, the Italia-China Biennial in Monza and "Gli artisti che ho amato" at CAOS Museum of Terni, in memory of Adriano Ronchini. In 2013 he exhibited again at ARCOS Museum of Benevento, taking part in the group show "Viaggio Immaginario". The following year he designed with his brother Lucio the Poster of the Strega Prize 2014 and took part in group shows, including "The Spring break Show" at Guidi&Schoen, "Cosa Succede a Rotondi?" in the context of the Sistema Irpinia project, "Land like the Sea" and "Capri The Island of Art", both in Capri. Between 2014 and 2015 he took part in "The Heritage of Art - Mimmo Paladino and Mohanna Durra" at The Jordan National Gallery of Fine Arts in Amman.

In his works Perone wants to reinterpret themes drawn from the world of fairy tales as well as from the day-to-day life, giving them a "magical appearances". From a technical point of view, the artist's choice of using sand for coating his pieces of work is on one hand linked with the recalling of a childhood world and the idea of art as a game, and on the other hand with the necessity of placing a sort of "filter", a slippage as to our usual perception of reality and is connected to the idea of fragility of things subject to processes of unceasing transformation. In that way the daily element undergoes a crystallization that casts it outside of time, thus reinforcing its metaphysical and enigmatic aspects.
