Paola Margherita Curriculum

The daughter of an artist, Margherita learned to work with clay at a very young age and prefers to work with refractory clays, which are pleasingly solid and rough. Each of her sculptures is unique but her body of work shares common styles and themes, particularly the interesting use of depth of field and perspective. Her figures hold center stage in compositions formed by simplified geometric lines; the result is the creation of innovative relationships between the figures and the surrounding space. Margherita uses a historic manual method and traditional techniques to create her geometric perspectives.

Margherita's most unique works are her paper sculptures, made from assembled cardboard cutouts shaded in pencil. The finished pieces are a contrast between precision craft and soft definition: angular shapes created by the linear cardboard sheets paired with the nuance of chiaroscuro shading. This visual contradiction is a strong commentary on the enigmatic and indecipherable present moment but, at the same time, maintains a sense of beauty. Thus, Margherita is able to revisit the theme of the classic Italian and figurative aesthetic evolving towards an unpredictable and edgy modernity.

She has collaborated with the White Room since 2013.
