Giorgio Conta Curriculum

Born in 1978, Giorgio Conta grows in a stimulating environment. From a very young age he came into contact with various personalities of culture, including the pianist
Arturo Benedetti Michelangeli, a family friend. After high school, he attended the School of Sculpture in Ortisei, also dedicating himself to drawing and painting.

He creates monumental works and participates in various personal and collective exhibitions.

Maurizio Vanni, Valerio Dehò, Luigi Marsiglia, Massimiliano Castellani, Renzo Francescotti, Paolo Levi, Stefania Severi and Pupi Avati wrote about him.

Giorgio Conta says of him :
"My artistic research focuses mainly on the figure.
My figures can be dreamlike wrapped in the mystery that contains the unknowns, the uncer- tainty, the amazement, the enigmas of existence.
Life in all its forms has always been a reason for reflection for me.
I don’t mean my figures as in a fragmentary state of ruin, in the belief that it is aesthetically more eloquent and significant than when it was complete and intact.
The fragment in my works is not to be understood as a piece of a broken object, a detached part, a splinter of a lost wholeness that is no longer reachable, but rather as a building, an assembling to achieve wholeness, which can be then completed in the eye and mind of the beholder.
Perhaps more than fragments it would be better to define them as detached, isolated, “par- ticular”, “details” “parts” placed in the foreground and therefore highlighted. Such as a foot detached from the rest of the body that comes out of the base or a hand separated from the arm.
These details are elements of a puzzle that can ideally be recomposed, like the similitude of contemporary man “fragmented” internally in a sort of new palingenesis.
I find inspiration for the shapes of my sculptures above all in nature, in the woods and moun- tains that surround me.
In recent works I have focused more on this idea of “detached and recomposed” parts, also using irregular pieces of wood, with different essences, assembled together and subse- quently carved.
They are woods that I find in the woods of my valley and that are generally not used for sculpture. In some parts I wanted to use fir wood, brushed to bring out the grain. They re- mind me of the uneven beams and planks of the old barns and the dry woods of the fences, the stumps and uprooted plants that I find walking in the woods and that over the years, are eaten by the sun and corroded by bad weather.
With this process that digs into the wood I want to deepen the theme of time that passes and leaves its mark, indelible imprints also on man.
The furrows in which we can find our past which are our roots, our history and identity".
